Charles Gooss founded Chas. Goss to explore his interest in watch design. The Premiere is the first expression of that work: a compact, hand-wound watch built around dial texture, proportion, and considered details.

More than 25 years in dentistry, including cosmetic dentistry, periodontics, and implant surgery, have shaped his attention to form, color, and finish. That experience informs his approach to design; the watch itself draws on specialist case, movement, and dial expertise.

Based in Princeton, West Virginia, Charles is developing the Premiere with a willingness to revisit an idea and refine it until the physical object reflects the original intention.

A first prototype is a chance to compare the intention with the object. For the Premiere, that comparison has clarified the work still ahead.

From visualization to prototype.

The design visualization establishes the Premiere’s intended character: a warm salmon dial, a crosshatched outer field, a contrasting intermediate ring, applied black Arabic numerals, and small seconds at six.

The first physical dial allows those relationships to be evaluated in a real object. It brings the layout out of the image and makes the quality of the execution visible.

Refining the finish.

The first dial is not production acceptable. The finishing and execution need further refinement to achieve the appearance intended for the Premiere.

The photograph is shared as a development record. It should be read alongside the design visualization, rather than as an example of the final watch’s finish.

The next step.

A new dial manufacturer has been contacted. A new production partner and final manufacturing method have not yet been confirmed.

The focus remains on realizing the design with the right surface quality, definition, and consistency. The next prototype and confirmed production details will be shared as the work progresses.

Dial development

Before the numerals.

Without the numerals and printed markings, the dial’s surfaces can be seen on their own: the crosshatched outer field, brushed center, contrasting ring, and circular small-seconds texture.

The lighting in this photograph shows the metallic reflections more clearly. Color and contrast vary with the lighting and viewing angle. The numbered-dial image above has been adjusted to bring its lighting and color closer to this reference; its original photograph remains available for comparison.

This is a development record. The final production finish remains to be confirmed.

The first dial,

The first prototype has brought the design into the physical world. It has also shown why another round of refinement is needed before the dial is ready for production. A second development photograph shows the dial before numerals and printing.

The decisions
behind the Premiere.

Why 37 mm?

The intended scale is part of the design, rather than an afterthought. A 37 mm case gives the dial’s pattern and applied numerals room to be read while preserving a compact dress-watch profile.

Why hand wound?

A manual calibre supports a slender construction and makes winding a direct, daily interaction with the watch. The D100 also places small seconds where the dial design calls for it.

Why no date?

The dial is built around concentric surfaces, the hour numerals, and the seconds register. Leaving out a date window preserves that visual order.

Our first watch · in development

The Premiere.

A classic scale.
An individual expression.

The Premiere brings a warm guilloché dial, applied Arabic numerals, and black teardrop hands together in a 37 mm steel case. Small seconds sits at six; the center remains clear.

A Swiss hand-wound calibre makes winding part of the experience. The design is intentional in its simplicity, with detail that rewards time and attention.

Development status

The first dial prototype is being refined. Final production details, price, and availability will be announced as development progresses.

The hand-wound D100

50 hours of power reserve.

More than two days from a full wind. A longer reserve than the traditional ETA/Peseux 7001’s published 42–45 hours.

The Ickler case is specified for the ETA/Peseux 7001 format. La Joux-Perret lists the D100 as dimensionally compatible with that format.

Final assembled watch dimensions, water resistance, movement grade, regulation, and production finish remain to be confirmed. The Ickler case documentation lists a nominal 8 mm height and 5 ATM case rating; these are supplier case specifications, rather than verified ratings for the completed Premiere.

A few useful answers.

Can I buy or reserve the Premiere now?

The Premiere is in development. Interest registration is open, but sales and reservations have not opened. Registering does not reserve a watch or require a payment.

Is the watch shown a completed production piece?

The full-watch images are design visualizations. The physical dial image shows the first prototype. Case and movement images are supplier references, labeled wherever they appear.

How is the guilloché dial made?

The dial design uses a repeating crosshatched motif. The final production method and manufacturer are still being established; no hand engine-turning claim is being made at this stage. Further details will be shared alongside the next prototype.

When will price and availability be announced?

Price, release timing, edition size, warranty, and delivery terms will be confirmed as the design and production arrangements are finalized. The journal and interest list will carry those updates.

Where is Chas. Goss based?

Charles Gooss designs the Premiere in Princeton, West Virginia. The selected case is from Ickler in Germany and the movement is from La Joux-Perret in Switzerland.

The design

One dial.
Several textures.

The crosshatched outer field catches light differently from the brushed center. Between them, a silver-toned ring adds contrast and depth.

Applied black Arabic numerals and teardrop hands bring a clear visual anchor to the warm surface. A small-seconds register adds its own fine, circular texture at six.

A closer look

The language
of the dial.

Guilloché describes a family of repeating decorative patterns that give a surface texture and a changing relationship with light. Traditional engine-turning cuts these patterns mechanically; similar motifs can also be produced by other methods.

For the Premiere, the design is established and the production execution is still being refined. The final method, manufacturer, and finish will be documented when confirmed.

The outer field.

A fine diamond pattern surrounds the hour numerals and creates the dial’s most textured surface.

The center.

A brushed salmon surface gives the hands and the Chas. Goss name a quieter background.

The seconds.

A circularly textured subdial introduces a second rhythm without a date aperture.

A warm salmon tone meets a fine crosshatched pattern. A silver-toned ring frames the brushed center, while applied black numerals and teardrop hands give the dial its character.

Each element has a purpose. Together, they create a watch that invites a closer look.

The Premiere is planned around a 37 mm German-made Ickler steel case and the Swiss La Joux-Perret D100 hand-wound movement.

The D100’s specified 50-hour power reserve gives the Premiere more than two days of running time from a full wind.

Polished and brushed surfaces complement the dial. Small seconds at six keeps the display balanced and uncluttered.
